Inaugurated December 2, 1993, the Oujé-Bougoumou Headquarters is the center of operations. Nestled solidly on the hillside, this two-storey building is a constant bustle of activity, phone, fax, motion, and laughter.
For the roughly 35 employees here, things run on Cree time, which, one elder explained, is the appropriate time.
This building, the seat of Oujé-Bougoumou self-government, is a culmination of our political struggle to affirm our existence as a separate aboriginal group, to affirm our political and economic role in the territory, and to affirm our jurisdiction over our own affairs within our territory. This building declares by its very presence that the days of our dispossession from our land are finished, and our alienation and marginalization from the economic and political life of this region are over and done with.
Our most important objective for the activities that take place in this building, is to translate our traditional values and culture into a contemporary context, and to retain the essential elements of our traditional way of life in our modern community.
