Our community

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Ouje-Bougoumou Cree Nation, one of the First Nation communities, and the newest, that comprises the Cree Nation of Eeyou Istchee in northern Quebec.

In addition to providing you an account of the very dramatic and gripping history of our community, we also offer you a virtual tour of our award-winning community which has received national and international recognition for our creative contributions in the area of sustainable community development.

You will learn about our process for designing our village, our decisions regarding its dominant and striking architecture that reflects our traditional culture, and our very unique innovations in alternative energy technology which reflect our commitment to our traditional values and to sustainable development.  You will get a glimpse into the Cree Nation’s Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute which is located in our community.  This, also, is an award-winning institution through which the Cree Nation has chosen to share the richness of Cree culture and Cree history with all peoples.

Our website will inform you about the wide range of awards that Ouje-Bougoumou has received and why our community is sometimes referred to as a model Indigenous village.

And finally, you will find out how you can experience, first hand, our traditional Cree culture as it continues to be practiced on our traditional territory with our Elders who are eager to share their insights into our culture and who will invite you to participate in the activities that have been the basis of our sustenance and survival for thousands of years.  And, of course, you will learn how you can visit, and stay with us, in our very special community.

We look forward to seeing you….virtually, and in person.
