Hi everybody! My name is Amy Micheline Mianscum, I am 16 years old and was born on May 02, 1981, in Chibougamau, Quebec Canada.

Before I started going to school here, I went to school in Chibougamau, because we did not have a school here, when I was in grade six I started going to school in O.J, that's when the construction of our new school was completed. All the way from grade six until now I was here at the Waapihtiiwewan (vision) School. I'm going to be in Grade ten this fall at the Waapihtiiwewan School.

We have a nice village and we're proud of it. There are nine Cree Communitie's in Eeyou Astchee (Cree territory) in Northern Quebec. I live about 45 minutes west of Chibougamau, Quebec and about 825 kilometers north of Montreal. I'm Eeyou (which means Cree in English) from Eeyou Astchee (Cree territory) of Northern Quebec.

I like playing Basketball, I play on a team called "Maahecun", at the Waapihtiiwewan School. My favorite teams in NBA are the Chicago Bulls and Orlando Magic, and I also like other sports, like Baseball,

Volleyball, Badminton and Broomball.

I have a younger sister her name is Angel Mianscum and she's 14 years of age, and she is also my best friend in the whole world, and we are in the same grade at school. I also have a little brother, his name is Katejun Coonishish and he's 9 years of age. My little brother races Motocross, he's one of the best racers in Quebec and was featured in Sports Ilustrated magazine. He was four when he started racing motorcycles and now today he races in the 60cc motorcross Division.

I have a Mother her name is Sarah and my father's name is Sydney. They both work in Ouje-Bougoumou. I still have my two grandma's, but I only have one grandpa and one great grand-father he lives in Waswanipi, it's about 2 hours west of Ouje-Bougoumou.

In the summer when school is over, I work as a summer student. I work at the youth center as secretary, also as a janitor. In my free time I go for walks with my friends and sometimes I go to the Youth Center, when I feel like playing pool. Sometimes on the weekends I go with my grandma in the bush and she tells me stories about how life was when she was a young girl. But sometimes I don't have time to go, I just stay in this village.

Let me tell you a little bit about my culture and the old days. Before we had our village we lived beside the highway. We lived in tents or in cabins, we had to go to school in Chibougamau, for the whole week and then on Fridays the bus drove us back to our homes and our parents were very happy to have us home for the weekend.

Our grandpa's would go hunting in the bush by pulling a sled in back of them, they used to walk far from home, they did not have a ski-doo or a car. Our grandma's would work in the tents, they cleaned the tents, and outside around the tent too, they use to clean the fish, beavers, bears, and moose. Then a few years ago, the village was built and they called it Ouje-Bougoumou (a place were the people gather). People come from Europe and other parts of the world to visit our village. Today our culture continues, even if we stay in the community or in a town. We have a cultural village and it was built for every one in the village, the cultural village is for the people who want to cook and take part in traditional activities.
