Ouje-Bougoumou is a Cree community about 45 minutes west of Chibougamau. Ouje-Bougoumou which means "The place where people gather" has about 600 to 700 people and it is about 7 years old. There are 9 Cree communities in Eeyou Astchee (James Bay Territory of Northern Quebec).
There are three languages spoken in our community, English, French and the most spoken language is Cree, it is our mother tongue. I speak all three languages, the language I speak the most is Cree then French and the language I speak the least is English.
My community is one of the newest communities of Canada. It is really nice. Our mayor is called a Chief.
Our Chief runs the community similar to a mayor.
In our community there is a baseball field, a football field, track and field, our Cree Administration building is like a town hall, we also have a store, a business office, a restaurant, a motel, a healing center, a fire hall, a police station, a municipal garage, a new basketball court, a new tennis court and new in line hockey rink,
they are going to build a new recreation center (arena) soon.

A Teepee at our Culture Village, made of birch bark.
Before and still now we live in cabins, teepee or in tents in the bush. We use wood to heat up our cabins, teepee or tents, in a stove or on an open fire and our floors are made of bows of pine trees. We use to go hunting for food, but now we eat almost just like you, Chinese food, Italian food , etc... but we still eat traditional food like geese, beaver, bear, moose, caribou, duck, fish, etc... Our clothing was made of moose hide and caribou hide but now we dress like, you but we still wear the moose hide clothes on special occasions.
